“GIVE me the splendid silent sun, with all his beams full-dazzling;”
That is a quote from the first line of “Give me the Splendid, Silent Sun” by Walt Whitman. Walt Whitman happened to grow up in West Hills, NY, and behind his house is what is now West Hills County Park. The photo used in this design was taken there when I went on a hike with some literary minded friends, while reading from Leaves of Grass by Walt Whitman. It just so happens that West Hills park is across the street from my house (Walt Whitman’s house, now a museum, is about a 1/2 mile up the road). It is believed that he wrote his epic Leaves of Grass while spending time in the park, which contains Jane’s Hill, the highest point of Long Island. My friends and I hiked to Jane’s Hill that day, and this photo was taken not far from there. Fittingly, the high point monument on Jane’s Hill has a poem carved into it by Walt Whitman.
